What Do You Want To Major In? Students are inundated with this question and often don’t know how to answer it. It’s an understandable dilemma. Often students have not had guidance to learn how their interest, skills, and curiosities translate to careers and jobs. Further, their knowledge of potential industries is typically quite limited.

It’s a good idea for students to explore a wide variety of careers. They should think about what kind of work environment they would prefer such as indoors or outside? With people or individually. What kind of preparation is needed for a particular job and what kind of lifestyle it would provide. One way for students to further investigate careers which may be of interest to them is to use a resource such as Career Finder where a simple assessment can help a student see which jobs might match their skills and interests.

Seeking out professionals is another way to learn. Take advantage of guest speakers and career fairs at school. Speak with family, friends, and neighbors about their jobs and what kind of preparation was required to be qualified. Be sure to ask for any advice they would have to share with a younger version of themselves.
